The fire broke out in a barn about 6 a.m. at R & J Horse Sales
just west of Verndale, said Sheriff Mike Carr. He also said about 40
horses were killed.

Foul play is not suspected in the fire, which is under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the state fire marshal.

Firefighters from Verndale and four other departments battled the blaze. No injuries were reported.

Verndale is about 40 miles west of Brainerd in north-central Minnesota.
